My name is Gregor Werner. I hold a PhD in Medieval History, specializing in military history and early East-West contacts.

My original research focused on the first diplomatic missions between Europe and the Mongol Empire—particularly the journeys of Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, Benedictus Polonus, and C. de Bridia—and the Latin texts documenting those encounters, including the Historia Tartarorum attributed to C. de Bridia and the mission accounts of Benedictus Polonus. These represent key documents from the earliest phases of East-West contact.

After a period away from formal academic work, I am returning to the field with fresh perspectives gained through two decades of teaching in East Asia, which provided deeper understanding of the region’s history and cultural specificities. My current research extends to early Jesuit texts from the China missions, particularly those connected to Macau, and the Latin legacy of intercultural scholarship.
